Hand-Stripping is the traditional process of removing hair by hand for wire-haired breeds such as Border Terriers, Fox Terriers and Irish Terriers and also silky-haired coats such as Cocker Spaniels and Irish Setters. The process is entirely done by hand without the use of clippers or scissors, pulling the hair out by the root (not just the top layer) so a new coat is able to grow in.  As such it can be time-consuming.

By clipping a coat you are just taking off the top layer of dead fur, so the dog's coat can look duller in texture and colour. These different coat types have a specific growth cycle where the hair becomes thicker and darker as it grows. Stripping encourages the coats natural growth, helping to keep its texture and genetic colouring, also keeping the coat dirt and water repellent. A dogs coat can be stripped all year round on a regular basis and it is recommended that some coats, such as that of the Irish Terriers and Cocker Spaniels, are regularly groomed every 6-8 weeks. Hand stripping requires considerably more time than grooming with clippers. It is a very specialized service and not painful when done correctly.
